Post-session
Be kind to yourself
I always advise clients to be gentle with themselves after a session.
Processing Change
There is generally a three day period where things are still shifting in the system. This can feel like an ‘access window’ with increased awareness of our internal process.
Common experiences include: improved sleep, emotional release, increased vitality and increased clarity and insights about the issue being addressed.
While a single session can make shift a lot, deeper issues consist of many layers. If you have a significant issue you’d like to address, a series of sessions is suggested. Multiple sessions get to the foundation of issues and provide ongoing support.
Release and Digestion
Part of energy work is concerned with release and digestion of the ‘energy blocks’ (distortions/stagnations/disconnects) we hold within our field.
The delicate art of letting go.
Sometimes there can be a very obvious purging during or after a healing session. Sometimes it is more subtle. Remember this is temporary and part of the process.
Some after effects of energy work
Feeling tired
This is very normal, particularly in people who are overworked and over-extended, leading super-busy stressful lives, with little time to rest. Sometimes people are completely zonked - especially after a first session. Don’t worry, this doesn’t happen every time! Often we are fuelling ourselves on stress hormones and adrenaline. When we take a moment to drop deeper, we realise the extent of our exhaustion. Here is an opportunity for an energetic reset. Listen to your body and rest-up. Things will stabilise within a day or so. Continued sessions can help rebuild your system and your energy-levels.
Or, feeling energised
Feeling totally rejuvenated and energised. A deep sense of wellbeing and increased levels of vitality. Learn how to maintain this. See article on Energy leaks.
Emotional swings/releases.
Again, this is very normal and a way of detoxifying the system. Although it can be uncomfortable it is ultimately a ‘good thing’. Emotions are energy. When we begin to relax deeply, stuck or unprocessed emotions can come to the surface for healing. Give yourself the gift of time and space to process the feelings. You will feel lighter. See article on Emotional Healing for more on this.
Urges to speak things long held back
Changes in digestion
Sometimes people urgently have to go to the bathroom after a session - it is another method of detoxification and a positive sign. Make sure you keep hydrated to support the detoxification process.
At home, there can be changes in the frequency and quality of urination and bowel movements. Digestion and release are key metaphors.
Changes in Menstruation
For pre-menopausal women there can be changes in the timing and the quality and quantity of menstrual blood. It is not uncommon to come on after a session.
Physical soreness
Sore or bruised muscle/tissue sensation. Random body pains or body sensations. Flu-like feeling. Again, this is temporary as your system moves into balance.
Skin breakouts. Rashes or spots.
Literally, things coming to the surface as the body begins to release pathogenic information
Dreams
It is not uncommon to have vivid dreams the evening of the healing or in subsequent days. "Purging" type dreams with strong emotional release content. Pay attention.
Increased Clarity & Stillness
A deep sense of calm. Sudden insights leading to self-inquiry.
Increased depth of practice in yoga or meditation.
Fear of Change
Why people do not allow change
Change can be scary. Releasing pathogenic beliefs/attitudes/stories/conditioned behaviours can create a sense of instability. We are used to running the old patterns, almost cosy in them. This is a big thing and one of the main reasons, in my experience, why people do not allow change.
Don’t Panic
When something releases from the body/energy body, it leaves a space, the mind can find that uncomfortable. So it takes a little time to trust that new sensation - to integrate it - and not just engage a habitual defence mechanism - eg numbing out with TV, food or alcohol.
There is an aspect of mind that perceives change as loss - and all loss is perceived as sad/bad. The mind does not differentiate between something lost that is actually bad for you, and something lost that you actually need.
Mind-Body Disconnect
Many of us are permanently busy and distracted, living in our heads and cut-off from our feelings. Often we don’t address an issue until our bodies are screaming at us.
Energy work can heal this disconnect. As we cultivate awareness of what is happening inside the body and begin to notice the connections between external stimuli and internal responses we get more attuned to what our body needs.
